Tesla Powerwall DC – First-Generation Home Battery for Legacy DC-Coupled Systems
 
The original Tesla Powerwall—also known as the Powerwall 1—was a DC-coupled lithium-ion battery introduced in 2015 and officially discontinued in favor of the Powerwall 2 by 2017. This version was intended for integration with string inverters in DC-coupled solar-plus-storage systems, making it a suitable solution for early adopters looking to store excess solar energy before sending it to the grid.
 
With a usable capacity of 6.4 kWh and peak power output of 3.3 kW, the DC Powerwall supported time-shifting, emergency backup, and self-consumption use cases. It required a separate battery-compatible inverter to operate and was generally paired with early SMA or SolarEdge hybrid inverters. Because it did not include an integrated inverter, the system required more complex design and commissioning.
 
While no longer available, this unit is still present in the field and may be part of legacy residential solar installations. It is not compatible with the AC-coupled Powerwall 2 or Powerwall 3, and Tesla has discontinued both the manufacturing and active support of the Powerwall 1. However, existing systems may continue to operate if supported by a compatible inverter and energy gateway.
