Tesla Powerwall 2 – A Legacy in Home Battery Backup and Energy Storage
 
The Tesla Powerwall 2 was one of the most widely adopted residential battery storage systems in the solar industry. With a usable capacity of 13.5 kWh and continuous power output of 5 kW, the Powerwall 2 provided homeowners with dependable backup during grid outages and flexibility under Time-of-Use (TOU) utility rate structures. Its built-in inverter, battery management system, and compact form factor helped make Tesla a household name in the energy storage market.
 
Designed as an AC-coupled system, the Powerwall 2 was compatible with both new solar installations and retrofits, allowing it to be added to existing systems without needing to change the inverter. It could be paired with up to 10 units per system to provide extended runtime or power for large loads, making it a common choice for homes with high energy needs or electric vehicle charging stations.
 
The unit included integrated thermal controls and was rated for both indoor and outdoor use. It was most commonly deployed with the Tesla Gateway 2 for grid isolation, backup switching, and system monitoring.
 
In 2023, Tesla began phasing out the Powerwall 2 in favor of the Powerwall 3, which features a higher output and integrated solar inverter. As a result, the Powerwall 2 is now considered discontinued, although some units may still be available through certified installers with remaining inventory.
